Health Benefits : Turmeric

Turmeric is a flowering plant, Curcuma longa, of the ginger family. The rhizomes or underground stems are short and thick. Apart from being used as flavoring, turmeric has been used by Ayurvedic and Unani practitioners in India since ancient times.

Turmeric contains curcumin which has proven antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. An important point to remember is to have a pinch of black pepper with your turmeric as this helps the absorption of turmeric.

1. Antiviral properties : Curcumin, a component of turmeric, has been used as both a food additive and a herbal supplement, due to its potential medicinal properties.
“Previously, curcumin exhibited antiviral properties against several viruses, including dengue and hepatitis C” (BC Mounce – 2017)

2. Immunity builder : The medicinal properties in turmeric can help boost the immune system. Add a pinch of turmeric powder, a pinch of black pepper and a pinch of grated ginger to a teaspoon of raw organic honey to boost your immune system. Consume once daily.

3. Heart disease : Turmeric contains powerful anti-inflammatory compounds that can help reduce damage to arterial walls. Since inflammation is a strong component in so many conditions, especially heart disease, the anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin make it a great addition to any heart healthy diet.

4. Diabetes : Curcumin can reduce blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Curcumin improves insulin resistance. It reduces insulin resistance by helping insulin get into the cells. Curcumin also protects beta cells which produce insulin.

5. Kidney function : Curcumin supports the kidneys. It promotes clearance of creatinine and urea from the blood.

6. Liver function : The antioxidant effect of turmeric appears to be so powerful that it may stop your liver from being damaged by toxins. This is good for people whose liver function is impaired due to overuse of many drugs that damage the liver with long term use.

7. In addition to the above, turmeric is useful in anemia, measles, coughs and colds, digestive issues, sprains, eye health, skin health and several other disorders.
