Health Benefits : Okra

Okra, Okro. Bhindi, Vendakkai, Ladies Fingers, Gumo, Kacang, bendi – So many different names for our ‘humble Bhindi’

One of the most versatile vegetables, enjoyed by most people worldwide. Okra can be steamed, Pickled, eaten raw, cooked and included in salads.

1- Nutritional Content: Okra is a good Source of Mineral, Vitamins, Fibre,Folate, Iron, Niacin, Phosphorus and copper. When eaten in Salads or Steamed, it is very low in Calories.
2- Anti-oxidant properties: Okra Contains Quercetin derivatives, and both pods and seeds contain Pehnolic comounds. These Compounds have Anti-oxidants, Anti-Microbial and Anti -Inflammatory properties.
3- Cancer Prevention : Okra Seeds contain Oligomeric Catechins and Flavonoid derivatives. Both of which have been linked to a lower risk of cancer. Lectin, a type of protein is found in Okra, and was used in study to treat human breast cancer cells and was found beneficial in reducing cancer cell growth.
4- Vitamin K : Okra is rich in Vitamin K which is a co-factor in the blood clotting process. It also plays a role in strengthening the bones in our body. (Caution – if you are on Blood thinners eat okra in moderation).
5- Asthama Control: it is strongly recommended to consume Okra for people suffering from asthama.
6- Digestion: The mucilage of Okra contains large quantity of Soluble fibre, So it is extremely good for the Digestive system. Helps in Constipation, cuts hunger cravings and keeps you fuller for longer.
7- Diabetes : Due to the high fibre content Okra can promote better Glycemic control and improve Insulin sensitivity.
8- Anti -Fatigue benefits: Okra seeds contain Anti-oxidants and polyphenols, which promotes glycogen storage in the liver which means more energy for your cells.
9- Reduction of High Cholesterol : Okra promotes reduction of high cholesterol levels and avoids the build up of fat in your body. It lowers overall Cholesterol and Triglyceride levels by enhancing the production of Bile acids in the stool. These acids avoid Atherosclerosis and thus prevents heart attacks in the long term.
