Health Benefits : Celery

Celery contains a huge variety of nutrients consisting of Vitamin A, B2, B6, C and K, Molybdenum, Folate, Potassium, Manganese, Copper, Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, and Pantothenic Acid. It is also Fibre rich.

  1. Hypertension : Celery was used to treat hypertension in traditional Oriental medicines. Being a good source of Potassium, celery helps to maintain blood pressure (as long as no salt is added). Scientists have also found that a compound in celery called 3n-butylphthalide not only acts as a sedative but can also lower blood pressure. Also the muscle relaxant effect of celery can help control blood pressure.
  2. Cholesterol : 3n-butylphthalide also has Lipid lowering effects and can reduce LDL and Triglyceride concentration.

CAUTION

The seeds of Celery contain volatile Oils, Flavonoids, Coumarins, and Linoleic acid, and are therefore not good for pregnant women because they may cause contractions in the uterus.
