
Now that summer is in full swing we are all looking forward to a watery fruit that Nature has created for us. Not only is it bright and beautiful and refreshing, it has a host of health benefits. It helps us through the hot dusty summer days.
Nutrient Content: Watermelons are 90 percent water, but contain protein, sugar, fiber, fat, carbohydrate, sodium, potassium, vitamins A, B5, B6, C, magnesium and iron.
Glycemic Index: People think that because watermelon has a high glycemic index of 72 per 100 gm. serving, the glycemic load is very low- only 2. So it is safe to be eaten by diabetics- in moderation.
White flesh of Watermelon: One tends to eat only the red part of the watermelon, but the white flesh contains the amino acid Citrulline.
This promotes blood flow and improves circulation and cardiovascular health. Also the white flesh is excellent for Urinary Tract infections.
Heart health: The lycopene content of Watermelon reduces cholesterol levels and the occurrence of cardiovascular disease. Watermelons contain more lycopene than tomatoes.
Weight loss: Watermelon is mostly water, combined with a high fiber content. This keeps you satiated longer and hence, promotes weight loss.
Inflammation: Watermelon contains amino acids, L- arginine, and L- Citrulline, powerful anti- inflammatory agents so are good for preventing inflammation.
Alkalinity: Watermelon is alkaline, so neutralizes the acid levels in our body and keeps our body alkaline.

If you eat an abundance of Watermelon daily, you may experience problems from having too much lycopene or potassium. People with too much potassium in their blood, should not consume more than one cup of Watermelon daily.
